Its scary, fun, crazy, and rewarding...here are a few of the things we have learned:
1. Babies are Messy
How does something so small and cute make such a mess? When Jaxon spit up in the hospital for the first time we were so worried. The nurse just laughed and said he was fine, but it freaked us both out. Since then we have both had multiple clothes, pillows, blankets, backpacks, and pretty much anything else you can think of spit up on. You can never tell when its coming he just keeps the same face and then all of sudden ....you're a goner....haha. Most of the time it happens when his dad is holding him ;).
Warning if you are pregnant with a boy..There is definitely a technique to putting on their diapers. I couldn't figure out why all his clothes were getting wet at first until Teresa taught me a little trick. Since then we have saved multiple outfit changes through the day.
2. Babies are unpredictableAs soon as we feel like we are getting the hang of things and he is on a good schedule, he changes it all up. For a few days he'll sleep like a champ and then all of sudden it is 3:00 am and he is staring up at mom and dad, kicking his legs with a smirk on his face, because he thinks it is play time ;). He is a funny kid.
I've stressed myself out a few times reading and rereading books, blogs, and my notes from college, but in the end every baby is different. I try to be consistent and put him down for naps in his bed so he will be used to it, but lets be honest....there is nothing better than having a napping baby snuggle with you and knowing you are their favorite person in the world :)
3. Babies are the best! The first few weeks are hard and I have thought to myself more than once.."my life is over." But in the end I love being a mom, I love watching Brad be a dad, and I love being parents together. Jaxon has brought a new sweet spirit into our home. We love watching him and getting excited with each new sound and face expression he makes. When it comes to parenthood we still have a lot to work on, but working on it together is part of the fun. Neither one of us really knows for sure what we are doing so we are figuring it out together the best we can.
This morning I pulled Jaxon into our bed to sleep a little longer next to me. I laid there feeling so lucky to be snuggled between my two favorite people in the world. It was one of the moments I have loved more than anything these last few weeks. So yeah, parenthood is hard. I have had less sleep than ever before, I don't get to shower everyday, and I haven't lost most of the baby weight, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's amazing how much love you can feel for something so small. Everyday brings something new and even though I sometimes feel like "my life is over"...I like my new life a whole lot more.
